Neighbourhood Wardens

Community Reassurance and Involvement

The development and investment in Neighbourhood Wardens has been at the forefront of our strategy to reduce crime and antisocial behaviour and in particular the fear of crime, which blights the lives of many of our more vulnerable residents. The high visibility patrolling and awareness of local issues that they bring has had a profound effect on fear of crime. Yvette Cooper Minister of the Office of Deputy Prime Minister praised Knowsley’s Neighbourhood Wardens following an independent evaluation of the scheme, which reported that fear of crime, had fallen by 17% since the wardens began patrolling in Stockbridge Village.

The Neighbourhood Warden programme is now being extended across the whole of Knowsley with six area teams, and over 100 wardens, providing a constant presence on the streets. At the same time the number of available Police Community Support Officers is being extended to 23. These are funded jointly by the Local Authority and the Police and will undertake security patrols targeting hotspot locations for antisocial behaviour.
