Designing Out Crime

The concept of designing out crime means to improve security and reduce the opportunity for criminal and antisocial behaviour by producing design solutions to defend or eliminate unusable or troublesome external areas.

Knowsley MBC has an officer within the Neighbourhood Management Team whose duties include a range of activities that offer advice and solutions aimed at reducing the opportunity for crime and the fear of crime in the built environment across the borough.

A whole range of measures from security fencing, alleygating, thinning landscape areas, improved lighting, cctv etc can help reduce the degree of problems that can blight the community and environment.

An essential part of the job is the examination of planning applications to ensure the borough does not inherit from developers potentially problematic areas which could emerge as future hotspots or rat runs for criminal and antisocial behaviour.
